Help Prevent Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis is a condition referring to the narrowing of spaces in the spinal canal which exerts pressure on the nerves traveling through the spine.

Pain and other symptoms linked with spinal stenosis are the result of compressed nerves.

Spinal stenosis can occur in the lumbar spine (low back) or cervical spine (neck). Symptoms such as radiating down shoulders, arms, legs, and buttocks may also be experienced.

The most prevalent signs and symptoms of spinal stenosis include:

-Back and/or neck pain

-Numbness, tingling, radiating, and/or weakness in the legs or arms

-Muscle weakness

-Difficulty walking

Lifestyle changes to reduce risk factors for spinal stenosis

Do regular stretches: You can keep your spine flexible and maintain a decent range of motion by gently stretching the muscles of your spine every day. Back muscles that are strong and healthy help to support your spine and lower your risk of injuries that might cause early onset spinal stenosis.

Daily exercise: Daily exercise increases blood circulation that benefits your spine. If difficult due to pre-existing pain or other medical issues, daily 30-minute walks can help incorporate minimal activity into your lifestyle.

Quit smoking: Blood vessels constrict when smoking, cutting off healthy blood flow to the spine. This can cause early degenerative changes in the spine, increasing your risk of pain and other symptoms associated with spinal stenosis.

Maintain a health body weight: When overweight or obese, the additional body weight puts excessive pressure on the joints of the spine. This can increase your chances of developing other painful conditions, such as bulging discs and arthritis, in addition to spinal stenosis.

Pay attention to posture: Particularly when working a desk job or manual labor job, make sure that proper lifting techniques are utilized and that your back is straight. This will help avoid trauma to your spine and other injuries that many increase your risk of spinal stenosis.
